Mindfulness is the gentle effort to be continuously present with experience.  This conference brings together speakers from various disciplines supporting our consideration of mindfulness in libraries, legal education and practice.

Do we librarians fail to give ourselves over completely to the moment – the reference interview, the question being asked, teaching classes, the catalog record, etc.? Librarians love to multitask. How can we not multitask, given the nature of our jobs, with the information-saturated environments in which we work?

We will explore how practices will lead us, and those we serve, to be mindful, increase intellectual and emotional intelligence, expand capacity and resilience, decrease stress and anxiety, cultivate and advance joy and satisfaction in the practice of law leading to enhanced civility, and ultimately foster a more just, compassionate and reflective legal system.

Speakers and Facilitators

FilippaAnzaloneFilippa Marullo Anzalone has served as Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Library and Technology Services at Boston College Law School since August 2002. Professor Anzalone teaches an Art Law seminar and also teaches Advanced Legal Research. Besides Art Law, legal education, higher education management, and law library leadership are of particular interest to her. Her interests include mindfulness in libraries and legal education. Professor Anzalone has published many articles, book chapters, book reviews and opinion pieces. She is active in the both the Law School and University communities. Professor Anzalone has served as a panelist and chaired several programs at recent AALL and AALS conferences and she has participated in numerous ABA, AALS, and NEASC site evaluations of law schools. She has served as a consultant to a number of law school libraries and she has lectured both in the United States and abroad on leadership and management issues.

DebCallowayProfessor Deborah Calloway began her career in Washington, D.C. practicing Employment and International Law. In thirty years of law teaching she has presented both clinical and academic programs. Since 1996 she has engaged in study and meditation practice in the Kagyu and Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Her legal experience together with her meditation practice made her realize the benefits of contemplative practices for lawyers. With this knowledge, she created the materials in the book “Becoming a Joyful Lawyer” practices for working with mind to discover its nature and how it functions. With these materials lawyers (and other helping professionals) can learn to practice their profession skillfully, reduce stress, promote contentment, and find meaning and joy in their work. Deborah has taught these materials since 2005. Lawyers have encouraged her to make them available as widely as possible. “Becoming a Joyful Lawyer” is her answer to this request.

Amy Eaton is currently the Seattle Library Manager for Perkins Coie LLP. Prior to Perkins, she has had the good fortune to work in an academic law library, county law library, corporate law library and law firms of various sizes. Amy has been a member of AALL since 1986 and is completing the last year of her term on the AALL Executive Board. When not working, Amy likes to run (slowly), read and is a beginning hiker .

MargaretFletcherMargaret Fletcher teaches mindfulness for the Center for Health Promotion at Concord Hospital. She received certification to teach from the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Center for Mindfulness in 2013. She is a founding member of the NH Professional Mindfulness Community. Margaret was invited in 2008 by Norman Scrimshaw to teach meditation through White Mountain Sangha, which she now leads as Guiding Teacher. Prior to teaching mindfulness, Margaret enjoyed a 20+ year career in financial services management. In her free time, Margaret enjoys reading, enjoying NH’s beautiful environment and watching great films at Red River Theatres.

LizMaillettLiz Maillett is an attorney and educator who has been engaged in the practice of law for over 22 years, and in the practice of mindfulness meditation for over a decade.  She is the founder of Still Sense which offers training in mindfulness for law firms, courts, businesses, nonprofits and government agencies.  “Over the years, I have found the regular practice of mindfulness making a very powerful contribution to so many aspects of my life and my work” she says.  “Through Still Sense, I’d like to share these benefits with others.”

Liz’s experience in mindfulness includes professional training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) through the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts.  The Stress Reduction Clinic at the Center for Mindfulness was founded in 1979 by well-known author Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn to help patients heal through an eight-week program of mindfulness meditation, gentle movement and experiential learning.  The training opportunities offered by Still Sense are based on the MBSR model.

As a business and employment lawyer since 1987, Liz has practiced law in a variety of settings from large city law firm, to solo practice, to in-house counsel for a growing business.  She has significant dispute resolution, transactional and litigation experience and has maintained an ongoing commitment to providing pro bono legal services.

“Mindfulness training is especially well-suited to the busy lives of legal and business professionals because it helps us hone that keenest of analytical tools we use in our work – our minds” says Liz.  “Mindfulness practice sharpens our awareness, trains our minds to be more stable and less reactive, and helps us not to lose sight of what is truly important in our work and in our lives.”

SophieSparrowSophie M. Sparrow is nationally recognized as an innovative leader in legal education, being named one of the one of the 25 most influential leaders in legal education in 2012, 2013, and 2014. The co-author of books on teaching law, including Working Together in Law (2014), What the Best Law Teachers Do (2013), Teaching Law By Design for Adjuncts (2010), Teaching Law By Design (2009) and Techniques for Teaching Law 2 (2011), she won the Inaugural Award for Innovation and Excellence in Teaching Professionalism in 2004, taught as a Fulbright Scholar in India in 2012, and worked with the American Bar Association’s Rule of Law Initiative in Jordan in 2014. Since 2002, she has conducted over 100 workshops for professors, administrators, lawyers, and judges in the US, Canada, India, Bhutan, Mexico and Jordan on topics such as active learning, team-based learning, assessment, metacognition, professionalism, professional development, legal education, and legal writing. An innovator since she started teaching law in 1998, Sophie designed and ran UNH Law’s writing program for ten years (1998-2008), helped design UNH Law’s Daniel Webster Scholar Honors Program, and was one of the founding members of Arizona Summit (formerly Phoenix) School of Law. To her teaching, Professor Sparrow brings her experience practicing law, directing the UNH School of Law’s Career Services Center and teaching students ages 5 to 60. She learned about the transformative strategy of team-based learning a few years ago, and now uses it in her Torts, Remedies, and Writing for Practice courses. Before joining the former UNH Law in 1991, she worked as a staff attorney for New Hampshire Legal Assistance and as an associate with a New Hampshire law firm. Her best teachers are her two children.
